Chimneys
Horizon provide a comprehensive service for all types of chimneys encompassing concrete, steel, brick and various other structures. These services include surveys, repairs and installation etc. using skilled operatives and engineers.
Steel
Horizon have been working on steel chimneys since their incorporation in 1993. During this time they have become one of the leading companies capable of offering the full range of services relating to this type of stack.

Horizon can carry out the following:
- Design
- Inspection
- Access
- Installation
- Dismantling
- Maintenance
- Repairs
- Grit-blasting
- Painting
- Welding
- Lightning Protection
Steel chimneys have problems associated with them that other structures often don't have. These range from expansion to corrosion problems. These stacks can occasionally display instability characteristics and may require a design analysis to be carried out. The solution may involve the fitting of a damper or guy-wires. Whatever the result, Horizon have the knowledge and expertise to carry out any modifications necessary. The technical staff at Horizon have an in-depth knowledge of the Health & Safety Guide to Steel Chimneys (GS53) and subsequent changes prepared by ATLAS (The Association of Technical, Lightning and Access Specialists) for which we are members.
Brick
Brick Stacks, although one of the oldest designs in use today, are still prevelant throughout the UK. As with other chimney types they require particular skills and expertise to work on them. Some of these stacks were constructed early in the last century and yet with a pro-active maintenance programme they can last for many years to come. Horizon have both the management and operatives with the expertise necessary to achieve this in-house. This includes the following: surveys, AccessRepairs, Demolition, Lightning Protection, Repairs can vary from pointing and rebuilding brickwork to painting smokebands and fixing steel restraining bands.Repair work is carried out both externally and internally.

Concrete
Concrete stacks are one of the most common types of chimneys being used. Concrete is more prevalent on taller structures, however stacks as low as 20 metres can also be found. Despite the height variations the form of repair tends to be the same. Often the only significant difference is whether the stack was constructed as 'lift-over-lift' or 'slip-form'. One major feature on the taller stacks is the form of access. Whereas on the smaller structures rope access can be used, on the major chimneys it is likely to be bolt-on scaffold or suspended cradles. Whatever the type, Horizon are able to provide the access and the repair work. This is provided as follows: Surveys, Access, Repairs, Maintenance, Painting, Demolition, Lightning protection. The work described above also involves spalling repairs, crack injection, lining rebuilds, replacing gas seals and application of anti-carbonation coatings

Fibre glass
Fibre-Glass for structures and flues is probably the least used material for general use. It tends to be used mainly in the chemical and specialised process industries. Although installing and repairing fibre-glass can be extremely difficult, Horizon have the experience to do this. Due to the technical variations in running processes it is recommended that in the first instance you contact Horizon direct to discuss this further.

Flues
Flues are an integral part of any chimney or process exhaust system. The majority of these are manufactured from steel and normally display the same characteristics as steel chimneys. The most common problems tend to be caused by corrosion due to age or deviations from the original design criteria relating to temperatures, efflux velocity and exhaust gas properties. Although the expertise required to service these structures is both varied and comprehensive Horizon can provide this in-house. Where extremely complex technical problems occur of a design nature advice is available to Horizon through expert consultants who are leaders in their field.Horizon provide the following services on these structures: Design, Access, Installation, Dismantling, Maintenance, Repairs, Grit-blasting, Painting, Refractory, Replacement,Welding, Lightning Protection.

The importance of regular inspections
The importance of regular (in most cases annual) inspections by ATLAS member steeplejacks is clear to see in the photos below. The neglect of either regular inspections or a lack of remedial works being carried out has left this chimney in a very poor condition.
